founder story
I am so happy you are here. Let me introduce myself.
my name is Lavinia Rusanda founder and CEO of nine2five - a self-funded skincare brand defying the traditional ways of the beauty industry through silver linings.
I am a 24 year old engineering and commerce new grad and full-time content creator.
I was born in Romania and my family immigrated to Canada in 2005 when I was just 3 years old. From a young age I recognized the sacrifices my parents made to start over their lives in their 30s with two small kids, which has always inspired my consistent drive in school and my businesses.
To fully explain why I created nine2five we have to fill out all the puzzle pieces that make this brand what it is, so let me share that all with you.
my skin journey
8 Months post birth control
I struggled with acne from the age of 13 with fluctuating hormonal breakouts here and there, but it was really my adult years where my acne journey took a turn. After two years of being on the birth control pill — feeling so disconnected from my emotions and body, heavy brain fog, and a sudden lack of motivation for the things I loved — I decided to get off hormonal birth control. Little did I know that 8 months later I would end up with the worst acne of my life, covering my entire face in painful cysts. I have vivid memories of crying myself to sleep, not just from the look of my skin but from the physical pain it brought on. This led me down a new road of self love, because I really had two choices: sit in a dark room and wait until one day my skin was clearer, OR live my life to the fullest and embrace the journey I was on. So, I chose to focus on the silver linings.
2 years post birth control
I felt a lot of pressure to "fix" my skin, being pushed toward Accutane, antibiotics, and endless unsolicited advice. I wanted to listen to my body and focus on healing through lifestyle changes: improving my diet, sleep, and stress levels, paired with finding skincare products that actually worked for my sensitive skin.
3 years post birth control
three years later, and I am grateful for the lessons that having severe acne taught me. It allowed me to detach my sense of worth from my physical appearance, because your skin doesn’t define you. This taught me self love, and patience through focusing on progress over perfection, and most importantly, the power of a positive mindset and taking back the control over your insecurities.
education
growing up I loved school, specifically math and science, but wasn't sure which road to take. Towards the end of high school, several people in my life suggested engineering and it just felt right. Upon applying to university, I discovered a new program offering a dual degree in engineering and business, perfect for someone who has always been entrepreneurial. I decided to major in chemical engineering and operational management to give me the foundation for building my own business in the cosmetic industry. For the past five years I have been building my career as an entrepreneur while completing my education, and after working in industry, I knew the traditional path wasn't for me.

career
started my social media journey at the age of 12, posting my outfits on a faceless Instagram account, the compromise my parents would allow. I grew up with a camera in hand, always wanting to be in front of it, making endless movies and skits and filming fake makeup tutorials on Photo Booth. My 11-year-old brother saw this and suggested I start posting on YouTube, even taking the initiative to create my channel. The same channel I have now been posting on for the last 10 years with over 2,000 videos uploaded.
I had no rapid growth online. Instead it was seven years of posting to a few hundred views, but no one could take my love for creation from me, and that love drove my consistency. Fast forward to today: I am a full-time content creator focused on changing the beauty industry through real skin checks, unfiltered makeup tutorials, and sharing my journey openly. We have built our community to over 800,000 followers across platforms — and this is just the beginning.
